A watch marked 3 ATM, 5 ATM or 10 ATM has been tested to resist a stated level of pressure under controlled conditions, but the number is not a simple promise that you can use the watch at the equivalent real-world depth. Movement, temperature, impacts, crown position, ageing seals and previous repairs all change how a watch behaves around water.

The safest approach is to treat water resistance as a complete system rather than a number on the dial. Read the instructions for the exact model, keep the crown correctly closed, avoid operating controls while wet and have the seals checked when the case has been opened or the watch has received a significant impact.

What ATM and metres actually describe

ATM is short for atmosphere, a unit used to express pressure. A marking of 3 ATM is commonly paired with 30 m, 5 ATM with 50 m and 10 ATM with 100 m. These figures describe a test pressure, usually applied to a stationary watch in controlled conditions. Everyday use introduces motion, temperature changes, chemicals and wear that the simple number does not show.

The crown and pushers are critical

The crown is one of the most common potential entry points. After setting the time or date, push it fully back into its normal position.
